Advisory on Phase-Out of Class 111 Tank Cars for Flammable Liquids Service in Canada
This advisory is to inform industry stakeholders of an important upcoming deadline concerning the phase-out of Class 111 tank cars used for transporting flammable liquids in Canada.
Upcoming Deadline: May 1, 2025
As mandated by Transport Canada standard TP14877, Clause 10.5.6, all jacketed and unjacketed legacy Class 111 tank cars, as well as jacketed and unjacketed enhanced Class 111 tank cars (also known as jacketed and unjacketed CPC-1232 tank cars), will be prohibited from importing, offering for transport, handling, or transporting Class 3 flammable liquids after May 1, 2025.
Compliance and Standards
These requirements are also incorporated in the newly updated standard CAN/CGSB-43.147-2023 via Clause 10.5.5. The standard CAN/CGSB-43.147-2023 is set to replace TP14877 within the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations, following a regulatory amendment that is currently in process.
