Grounding and Bonding

Grounding and Bonding

Grounding and bonding flammable containers is a crucial safety practice mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards to prevent static electricity-related hazards in workplaces where flammable liquids or gases are handled.

First, look at what the terms “grounding” and “bonding” mean.

Grounding: OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.106(e)(6)(ii) requires the grounding of flammable liquid containers during dispensing operations. Grounding involves connecting the container to the earth using approved grounding equipment, such as a conductive wire or strap. This connection dissipates any static charge buildup on the container, reducing the risk of sparks and potential fires or explosions.

Bonding: OSHA regulations emphasize bonding to prevent static discharge between conductive objects during flammable liquid transfers. OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.106(e)(6)(iii) mandates bonding all containers and equipment together to equalize electrical potentials and minimize the risk of sparks. Bonding ensures no potential differences between objects that could lead to static discharge.

What can you do to keep your facility safe:

  • Use OSHA-approved grounding and bonding equipment specifically designed for handling flammable materials.
  • Regularly inspect grounding and bonding connections as per OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.106(d)(3)(iii) to ensure they are securely attached and provide a low-resistance path to the earth. Promptly replace any damaged components.
  • Provide comprehensive training to personnel on proper grounding and bonding procedures as required by OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.106(e)(6)(i), ensuring they understand the importance of these safety measures.
  • Adhere to all relevant OSHA regulations and guidelines specific to your industry and location to maintain a safe working environment.

This short video provides good information and suggestions concerning how to ground and bond containers when transferring product from one container to another.

By adhering to OSHA standards for grounding and bonding flammable containers, you can mitigate the risk of static electricity-related incidents and promote workplace safety.
